The Danish Industry
Production
Raw material supply
Fishing for short-lived species such as sandeel, Norway pout, and sprat forms a core part of Denmark’s industrial fishery. Denmark holds a substantial share of the EU’s quotas for these key species, contributing to an average annual landing value of €155 million. In parallel, Danish factories receive between 100,000 and 160,000 tonnes of trimmings each year from the human consumption sector. These by-products are an increasingly important source of raw material, making up to between 25-30% of annual raw material supply, supporting circular resource use and reducing waste. Together, wild-caught fish and trimmings underpin Denmark’s fishmeal and fish oil production
Marine Ingredient production
Since 2015, Denmark has produced an average of 170,000 tonnes of fishmeal annually, making it the leading producer in Europe for 2024 with an output of 130,000 tonnes of fishmeal and 33,000 tonnes of fish oil.
