Turning Marine Biomass into High-Value Bio-Based Nutrition – New white paper from Food Nation

2026.1.23

Global food systems are under growing pressure to deliver more nutritious food with fewer resources. Climate change, biodiversity loss, supply-chain volatility and rising demand for protein and healthier diets are accelerating the need for science‑based, scalable and resource‑efficient solutions.

A new white paper from Food Nation, Ingredients and Biosolutions – Smart Danish solutions for sustainable food systems and global food security, highlights how Denmark is addressing these challenges through its globally recognised ecosystem for ingredients and biosolutions. Marine Ingredients Denmark has contributed to the white paper with the case Rich Ingredients Fresh from the Sea”, highlighting the essential role of marine ingredients in modern, sustainable food and feed systems.

Drawing on more than 150 years of scientific excellence, Denmark has become a global hub for advanced ingredients and bio‑based solutions that improve efficiency, reduce waste and enable sustainable food and feed production across the entire value chain – from primary production to food processing and circular innovation.

Our case illustrates how fishmeal and fish oil function as strategic bio-based ingredients. Naturally rich in essential amino acids, vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids, they deliver high nutritional density with a low resource footprint, supporting growth, health and immune function in both aquaculture and terrestrial livestock.

As Europe’s leading producer, we supply high-quality marine ingredients to feed and pet food manufacturers in more than 40 countries. Our production is rooted in responsible resource management and modern marine biorefinery technology, making efficient use of short-lived pelagic species such as sprat and sandeel, alongside up to 25% upcycled trimmings from seafood processing.

Through strict traceability, species separation, continuous quality control and internationally recognised certifications including MSC, ASC and MarinTrust, we ensure transparent and sustainable sourcing. In parallel, marine ingredients enable climate-smart feed formulations by reducing dependence on land-intensive crops and optimising the use of finite natural resources.

Overall, the case demonstrates how marine ingredients are a cornerstone of a circular, bio-based economy – delivering high nutritional value, maximising resource efficiency and supporting resilient food systems – and how Denmark continues to lead in raising sustainability and performance standards across the value chain.
